Your focus for the week

Wednesday – Euro area Flash PMIs

Euro area’s business confidence held up well in July showing little sign of the Brexit-related spillover from the UK surveys. But a slowdown in the UK should impact the European activity at some point—it will be interesting to see if this will already be evident in the August PMI numbers.

Thursday – Japan CPI

Japan’s headline inflation returned to the negative territory earlier this year and, given the strength of the yen, is likely to remain on a downwards trend for now. For the Bank of Japan to maintain its credibility, more will need to be done for the inflation target to be reached.

Friday – Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium

All eyes will be on Janet Yellen’s speech at the event this Friday. We are unlikely to get any clues as to the next monetary policy move – the focus is likely to be on longer-term issues as the title of the event indeed implies.
